Delphinium is a versatile plant that can thrive in all U.S. climates and soils if given proper care. How to grow your delphinium will be based on whether you plan to start with young plants or seeds. If beginning with young plants, be sure to pick strong seedlings that are less than a year old. When starting from seeds, look for hybrid seeds that are hand-pollinated.

When to Plant Delphinium

Though much depends on your climate and soil, delphiniums will usually start to rise in early spring (March) and bloom around mid-summer. Thus, plant your seeds in August for flowers to emerge the following summer season. Plant your seeds or plants about two feet apart and at a depth of two inches below the soil surface. Also, be sure there is good drainage in the area you are planting as these plants will not fare well if their roots are incessantly wet.

Perennial Varieties

Delphiniums do not need to be protected from frost during the winter, though many drastic changes in temperature can harm them out of season. Cover these plants if there is a short, out-of-season frost. These plants will grow back fuller in successive years if you trim them after flowering. Cut stems about a foot above the ground, just above leaf-level. Plants will peak at about two years old, though if well cared for, they may flower for three years or more.

Pests

Common pests to watch for when growing delphinium are mildew from over-watering and slugs. For mildew remedy, use any mildew spray or sulphur powder. Slug spray or charcoal can be used to keep these pests at bay. Finally, when your plant reaches three years old and starts bunching with flowers, you can easily divide and replant to spread your delphinium further.
